over christmas, i took a listen to the album “grimcore” by the band “the grimlets.”  at first listen, i wanted to call it “goth” and compare it to the likes of siouxsie and the banshees, the cure or bat for lashes, which is fair.  but after listening to the album a few more times it’s even more than that.  the sound of the grimlets is atmospheric, pretty and moody.  with vocals that remind me of the cocteau twins, the songs are echoing and layered like a soundtrack to a strange dream, that threatens to turn into a nightmare at any second — yet somehow doesn’t.  and under it all are ominous distant guitars reminiscent of joy division.  eerie yet beautiful, the songs resonate making you want to listen again and again to pick up each lyric and note.
